Teens are eating all the time and many of the foods they eat are snack foods. Unfortunately, snack foods often contain "empty calories," fat with slight or no nutritional value. Salty snacks are one of the first that teens reach for and sweet snacks are a close second.
Katy G. Wilkens, Ms, Rd, writes about snacks for teens in a "West Seattle Herald" article, "You are What You Eat: Teens and Salt." Potato chips are a popular snack, agreeing to Wilkens, because they are instant fat -- fat and salt. agreeing to Wilkens, the microwave is a teen's after-school appliance of choice.

Tees also consume high-salt sports drinks and vending engine snacks. Add fast food to this non-nutritious mix and teens are in trouble. "Experts say at least one in 10 of these teens is heading for serious trouble with high blood pressure," notes Wilkens.
Childhood diabetes -- type 2 -- is on the rise in America. The National Diabetes schooling Program, part of the Us Dept. Of health and Human Services, says teens can lower their risk of developing diabetes by maintaining a salutary weight and "choosing the right amounts of salutary foods -- including snacks."
The Young Women's health Website has published an report about salutary eating, "Nutrition and Teens: A Guide for Parents." house members are role motels for nutrition, the report points out. "It is much easier to cook, shop, and put in order tasty and nutritious meals and snacks when everyone is working on the same goals."
But some Grg's don't push salutary snacks to avoid arguments. I am not one of them. However, it has taken months to find salutary snacks my twin grandchildren will eat. Two and a half years have passed since my grandchildren moved in with my husband and me. I promote salutary snacking by discouraging snacking in front of the computer/Tv, having snack-size portions on hand, and talking about food at meal time.
